Overview
Like most technological achievement and pushes forward, the Military does the bulk of the funding for defense reasons. Modern military combat is a strange beast due to the peculiar and strange ways that both space combat and planetary combat can change depending on the planet, its gravity and local gravity wells.


Space Combat
Space combat is a relatively new function for humanity, and as such most tactics and skills in the art of space combat are infantile compared to the practice of ground and air combat. With space combat, not only are larger fleets limited in maneuverability but it also allows for choke points for those larger fleets to be caught in.

Often in movies, space combat is portrayed as a clash of two forces criss-crossing one another in combat, however this is almost never the case in actual practice. Several famous battles have occurred like that and that's where the fantasy occurs. In practice, space combat is much more about the two sides trading shots with their heavier guns while their fights and bombers attack exposed subsystems and enemy cannons. Because both sides are limited, larger ships tend to hold position or move slowly forward till stopping is preferable. Smaller vessels like destroyers and frigates will move out as flanking ships as they can escape to the gravity wells of planets.

This is where the famous crisscross fights actually happen as the smaller ships weapons are not designed for range usually so they move in for the kill, as the larger ships tear off chunks of armor plating. Its generally considered the no-man's land as fighter and bomber territory, creating an arena like space which has also invoked fantasies about ace pilots dueling and knowing eachother by name.

Most space flight is VTOL based, Carriers, Capital Ships and Dreadnoughts tend to not have VTOL capabilities. The United Militia Systems famously involve installing VTOL into their generally smaller and lighter versions of the big three as it gives them a better chance to get around firing positions.

Most navy personnel will recount hating being the largest vessels during combat, because while a frigate might be small, it has a chance to get away. Once a military force commits larger vessels, the expectation is either coming out victorious or destroyed.

Because of this expectation, there are medical frigates which cannot be targeted, they're specific job is to catch and grab escape pods, pulling the evacuating forces aboard and ship them off behind the lines. These ships are known as Mae West vessels, the name of the inventor of the original personal flotation devices.


Naval Combat
Naval combat, while many don't realize it, is still a regular occurrence on planets, however, instead of ships flying in space or sailing in the ocean the frigates and corvettes serve as ships, never touching water but still acting in the same capacity of old naval vessels.  Most corvettes actually only act as a support role and ferry the troops, tanks and other ground equipment necessary for battle while the frigates act as the artillery. Because larger ships cannot escape the gravity well, they also rarely fire down at land targets, instead focusing on each other while smaller vessels work inside, outside and deep within the gravity well.

To avoid damaging important infrastructure regarding technology, most combat takes place over the ocean which is why Naval Combat is still considered a common practice.

In these arenas, smaller carriers known as Wasp Nests are completely outfitted for the sole purpose of fighter and bomber aircraft. All smaller vessels are VTOL based, their main engines being rotatable. Communion of One ships tend to have permenant secondary thrusters aimed downward for certain manuevers.


Air Combat
Air Combat is no longer about speed or stealth, while speed and stealth helped conceal and protect fighters and bombers during the 21st century. The advances in targeting, identification and most importantly, missile maneuverability has spelled out the doom of stealth and fast flying fighters and bombers.

As such, most fighters have gone back to close range engagements taking full advantage of the VTOL engines inside the bodies of their fighters. Maneuvering has become less about who has the better turn radius and more about who can land their hits the best. This turns into a grueling air battle involving trying to get into a reverse maneuver posture. First developed my Terran Republic fighter pilots, the reverse maneuver takes advantage of the added back weight of fighters and bombers and involves turning and spinning the body around till the plane appears to be floating backwards. The tell tale sign of an Ace is their ability to go into a reverse maneuver in tight close spaces.

Because fighters and bombers are no longer looking for speed and instead maneuverability and turning radii. This puts a heavy emphasis on the thrust strength of their VTOL engines. While this may be related to speed, its actually the opposite, thrusts only last as long as the coolant can handle before cooking, stronger thrusts mean it gets hotter faster but you get more thrust out of it.

For bombers, the opposite occurs, they focus more on long term thrust capacity so they can float away on their side, giving their gunners and ball gunners a longer chance to effectively bomb a target.


Ground Combat
Ground combat hasn't changed much since the 21st century, instead the method of approach has changed and the ability to strike anywhere has formed out new stratagems for invasions but most strategies can still be traced back to the 21st century as tried and true methods of attack.

Personal combat computers, which are needled threads into the back of the neck from the helmet are most likely the only real innovation, giving the wearer the ability through their own neural impulse to switch channels and go through a menu. Combat armor as well is now repairable instead of throw away like the former clay based body armor. However, just as before, weapons still penetrate through quite easily.

Most militaries do not heavily armor their troops, instead focusing on spacing out the protection as best as they can. The United Systems Militia and Templars are exceptions to this rule. Instead focusing on putting more protection over vital organs through the use light weight alloys, its expensive but because of their relatively small size compared to House Aldrich and the Dragon's Commune, its affordable.

With the loss of 21st century antibiotics, wounds are a bigger gamble now then they were before. With the loss of the anti-biotics came the advent of gels that instead seal up a wound instantaneous, removing it from the dangers of germs and bleeding out however these gels break easily and so a soldier wounded on the field has to be gelled and then carried off carefully by medics or squad mates.

Recent advances in foreign anti-biotics has proven successful and so anti-biotics are starting to make a return however the use of them are almost always strictly used for severe medical reasons such as surgeries. Anti-biotics are longer willingly spread around as pastes of goop to spread over the hand.


Space Infantry Combat
The newest form of combat that came out of the first Universal War, pioneered by the Communion of One is Space Infantry. Differing from those who board vessels, Space Infantry fight in the vaccum of space, whether it be on top of a carrier's deck or inside a mining facility.

Anything without gravity or basic life systems are considered the vaccum of space and troops specialized in fighting in these conditions are used. Ground combat is brutal but you can walk away from it, in space the combat is vicious and heart racking, only the elite ever make it into the Space Infantry of their respective empire and one shot, one opening in a combat space suit is all that's needed.

The jobs usually pays a lot due to its dangers. Aldrich Common Core Military usually knight and make their Space Infantry into nobles after surviving 10 missions. United Militia Systems pay for veteran space infantry, giving them a life of leisure. In a strange function, only Space infantry of the Dragon's Commune may address or even talk to the Emperor directly. The Trinity of Gods do not usually perform in Space infantry, however Templars who fight in these conditions have holy and warding symbols carefully welded to their suits. Communion of One space infantry are given exclusive rights of privacy and freedom of speech.

Multiple physical issues occur to space infantry, not the least of which being muscle loss. Its due to a whole list of issues that they're celebrated heavily as giving major sacrifices for their Empire.
